The ‘Lexicon of the 19th and 20th century Polish painters’ project aims at presenting the biographical sketches of Polish painters from the turn of the 19th and 20th century in Polish Sign Language. The leading artists, whose work documents everyday life of their times or depicts significant events from Polish history, are Piotr Michałowski, Artur Grottger, Jan Matejko, Henryk Siemiradzki, Józef Chełmoński, Aleksander Gierymski, Leon Wyczółkowski,  Jacek Malczewski, Wojciech Kossak, Stanisław Wyspiański and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.

The biographical sketches of the most famous Polish painters from the turn of the 19th and 20th century are presented  in Polish Sign Language (PSL) with Polish subtitles. There is also a glossary of the painting terms and a glossary of Polish idioms based on the content available in sign language. Both are aimed at improving Polish native signers’ oral communication skills. 

„Między Uszami”, the Marek Mazurek Krakow Foundation for Development of Education of the Deaf,  was founded in 2005 on the first anniversary of the death of Marek Mazurek, a life-long activist for the Deaf [people] community of Poland. His life’s work focused on the improvement of the educational and  life situation of both children and adolescents with hearing disabilities.

The Foundation’s team focuses on familiarizing the hearing part of the society with the different but equally deserving linguistic and cultural identity of the Deaf in Poland. Our mission is to level educational opportunities for the Deaf and to create the best social conditions possible for them. Using modern technologies we create and present educational and cultural programs in Polish Sign Language. We develop projects that enhance both the general knowledge of the Deaf (focusing on Polish language, history, culture, art, etc.) and specific knowledge on a given topic (like projects about HIV/AIDS or The Deaf Mom on the Labour Market). We also participate in events that integrate Deaf and hearing people and communities. We provide training courses on deafness, the needs of Deaf people, Polish Sign Language and more.
